How to Protect Your Home and Car from Dog Drool

It's easy to love your dog. But it's not easy to love everything they do.

And one of the things that your dog might do is drool. And they might drool a lot.

So just how much do you love your dog?

Well, you find out when you sit in a puddle of their drool on the sofa...or if you slide across some on a hard floor.

Fortunately, there's a lot you can do to protect your home from dog drool.

What Causes Your Dog to Drool?

If you want to protect your home from dog drool, you have to first understand what causes it.

And there's a lot of causes:

  • Excitement

  • Thirst

  • Dehydration

  • Anxiety

  • Carsickness

  • Nausea

  • Cooling down

  • Dental pain

  • Teething

  • Irritation

  • Foreign body in throat or mouth

  • Breed

  • Mouth shape

Wow! That's a long list.

It's important to understand that if your dog has a sudden onset of drooling, that's not healthy.

If your dog starts to drool much more than normal, and this isn't characteristic of the way he or she behaves, then you might have a more serious medical problem going on.

This could be a sign of heatstroke, periodontal disease, neurological issues, separation anxiety, or other anxiety issues.

If your dog has a sudden onset of drooling that's not typical in his or her behavior, then you're wise to consider contacting your vet.

How Do You Protect Your Home from Dog Drool Anyway?

So, getting back to your home. How do do you protect that from dog drool?

Well, the first thing to do is to work towards prevention. One of the best ways to prevent dog drool from ever happening in the first place is to brush your dog's teeth.

Just like humans do, you should do this twice daily. Many dogs will come to enjoy this time, believe it or not.

Anyway, many of the common causes of drog drool are linked to oral hygiene. So, by taking care of that in the first place, you can help reduce your dog's total amount of drool.

Even though brushing your dog's teeth can help with dog drool, it may not eliminate the problem. So if your dog still drools, then you're forced to simply reduce the impact of the drool that remains.

So then, your best friend becomes a furniture protector. Not only is one soft and inviting to lay on, but it also provides an extra layer of protection and is washable.

Protective throws are easier to move around. So, if your dog lays in several different spots, that's a good way to keep up with their drool.

How to Remove Drool

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, ol' Fido gets drool on your couch or chair anyway.

So what then?

Here's a simple process to follow:

  1. For fresh and wet drool, dab the affected area thoroughly with a fresh and damp paper towel. Then, use a mild dish detergent or a furniture-safe cleaning product to finish the job off.

  2. For old and dried-on drool, skip the paper towel and move directly to using a furniture-safe cleaning product to do the job. If you can't get all the drool in one try, simply try again until it's all gone.

  3. For leather furniture, simply use a leather cleaner and buff away any drool.

What about cleaning drool off the floor?

That works completely differently.

Mix equal parts hot water and vinegar. Then add a few drops of dish soap. This formula has enough potency to break through the crusty, dried-on drool.

And just to make sure, always spot-test the formulation as you try it on different surfaces.

What if that still doesn't do the trick?

Well, the unfortunate fact is it may not. But, never fear, you can still remove the drool.

And you can do that with carpet cleaner or pet-specific cleaning solution. Just make sure you follow the instructions and spot test so you don't cause any damage to your home.

What about Dog Drool in Your Car?

So, let's move outside your home and into your dog's next most favorite place...your car.

Since car rides are the greatest thing since sliced bread to your dog, you'll have drool all over your windows, doors, and seats.

Window drool is easy to remove. Just use your favorite storebought window cleaning solution to take care of that.

For the doors and seats, just use the same procedure that you use for furniture in your home.

Yes. It really is that simple.

if you want to make cleaning your car ultra-simple, then simply use a car seat cover. Remove it. Wash it in your washing machine. And then let it dry.

So, that's it. That's all there is to keeping your dog's drool under control in your home and car!
